To become a good a web site designer, you must have the following:

- always in good mood,
- always fresh thinker
- able to conceive some new styles
- always in good health

in computer
- you must accurate in pointing mouse and typing.
- you must have vast experience "path or address or sources"
- you must have a good experience in graphic designing
- you must have an idea in scripting or programming such as JavaScript, Flash Action Script, VBScripts and Java, C++, VB programming including Database Software
- you must have an idea in tabling…
- you must have more resources or tools for web designing.

moreover,
- you must have an idea to think the purpose and beauty of an web site to be a good web site designer…
- you must a have more time for it and

finally,
- you are able to pay what is necessary for your website interest, coz, its a matter of RESOURCES & IDEA…

a open university home course is the way i went,and there is very good help on line with the course.. not very cheap but at home you can do it at your own pace..

The best thing you could do is enrol in a design course and perhaps a specialist photography/image manipulation course. It’s not just about learning some software and programming languages. Most people can learn to use Photoshop and a bit of HTML but to be successful in this industry you need to understand what good (and bad) user experience is.

Look for a reputable school/course and check out some of their graduating students work. Do they help you with work placement or experience after?

It is a tough industry and you will need to work hard to make it. You will also need to be good at networking. It does come down a lot to who you know. So get out there when you are studying – join groups, attend design events, see if anyone in your network works in the industry already and ask them for help/advice/introductions.

Studied a three year design/multimedia course and have now been working in the industry for 7 years (including for an isp, various agencies, fashion label and currently, a very well known internet company)

Ive been a graphic designer for 5 years now and i basically learnt it all from this site called http://www.lynda.com
It has all the training videos you need e.g flash, dreamweaver, photoshop, illustrator, indesign!!
If i was you learn indesign CS3 first then the restt!
Pay the yearly fee and get learning ) its worth it!

There are two parts to Web design

The Graphics and layout
The Programming (behind the website)

Learn Dreamweaver and HTML, along with Adobe Photoshop as a start.
