What is the best graphic design software for a business?

I am starting a marketing company but i want to be able to design things myself.

You will defiantly want the Adobe Creative Suite SC4. It’s the best and really the only design software out there, as far as graphic design media.

could you help me decide? software engineer or web site designer and programmer?

I know more of website programming but im torn what degree should i take this fall?

Software Engineer.

Web site design is fun and is lucrative, but there is usually only one web site designers per project. However, there are many software engineers per project. Software Engineers get paid more. Software Engineers do everything a web site designer and programmer does plus estimates how long it will take and figures out how it’ll get done.

If you like programming Software Engineer. If you hate programming, then web site designer.

What questions to I need to ask before hiring an in-house graphic/web design employee?

I want to hire someone to do all my product brochures and new web design, but here in my office. what are some things I need to ask the candidate and what kind of wage should I be offering?

To be honest, you can’t rely on questions and answers. They can tell you what you want to hear. Ask them to show you what they did in the last couple years at least. If you have no idea about how to tell good design/coding from bad, don’t do it yourself, as an expert to meet your prospective hire and evaluate him or her. I have an impression that you don’t know too much about web design, otherwise you wouldn’t ask this question. I recommend you – don’t do it, let someone who can get an objective and qualified opinion do it for you. Otherwise you risk hiring someone who will not be able to deliver what you or your clients expect.

Moreover, if you have one project only — don’t hire anyone in-house. You’ll waste your money. Hire a group of professionals — it will take less time and will save you money.

Anyone know a free graphic design software that doesn’t need to be downloaded?

I am teaching a Web design class, and I would like to teach some graphic design. I usually use Fireworks, but my lab doesn’t have it. I know there are programs like The GImp and Blender, but I don’t have the administrative access to download and install. Any one know a decent online one that we can use?

Dont go for html based graphic design software, not a good idea.

What you need to do is download the Gimp and burn the setup.exe file to a CD.

Then let all of the students install the program from that disk.

Do you pay a Web Designer up front for a Web Site?

Do you pay a Web Designer up front for a Web Site or after?

The designer should, if they want to be fair, ask for half or a third, or whatever percentage that makes sense for the project. What makes sense to me is that if a designer sets up milestones during the project timeline (say 3 of them), logically they should bill three times, once for each milestone completion. Or there may not be milestones set up, just a midway point instead. It depends on the person. But no, it’s not good business for them to ask for all up front.

Just to further this, the reason why a designer/developer should ask for some payment at first is so that they don’t get burned by a flaky client. I’ve been burned before where I do a lot of upfront work (without getting paid), then the client backs out.

What are the best cities/states in the US to work in Graphic/Web Design?

I am about to graduate and want to move to a city where the need for Graphic Design is high and pays well.
Thanks

Well that is difficult to say, they have to match living wage conditions.
There is no "hot spot" for graphic/web designers as you know people use the internet to get them or even outsource in a global competition world we are living in. You got to be not only good but you also have to get known too. You got to be patient, while you were in school people with high school education were already out there getting experience they sometimes have the advantage kinda backwards and there is natural talent as well.
